Can the solenoid on a IH 485 be replaced without removing the 4 bolt starter. Starter works well if main poles on solenoid are
shorted together.

Found my own answer, which is NO, it cannot be replaced while on the tractor. But, also found on closer inspection that the starter is a 3 bolt-on starter, and the one bolt I dreaded trying to get to does not exist. Removed the starter with no problem.

Learn from my mistake tho that just because the parts guy says the solenoid will fit a 485, that does not mean it will fit YOUR 485. There are at lease 3 different solenoids and of course I have the wrong one.

Anyone ever unsolder and take the solenoid apart and file/clean the contacts and put it back together? I used to do that on old Chevys and to save time am considering doing that this morning.
