I have a recently rebuilt water pump on a SMD. After about 20 hours of use, I found some black grease slung out from the groove at the pulley. I spoke to the rebuilder and he said not to worry as the front seal is installed backwards to allow grease to burp if necessary. I have cleaned this up several times and it continues to sling some grease. The book states it will happen if over greased. I haven't greased it since the rebuild. I removed the grease zerks and the cavity isn't full of grease or coolant. All looks well from what I can see, just wondering why this keeps slinging grease. Im assuming it is just pushing out excess grease from the original bearing packing of grease, but thought it would have stopped by now. |

it is possible that when rebuilt it has been greased more than necessary and now with coolant heat the grease is flying out. my thinking. |

My suspect is over greasing, clean it up and see if it happens again. It is important to remember that grease is not compressible so some must leave if some added. |

This makes sense to me. But I have cleaned it up good 6 times or more and it keeps coming out. I removed the grease zerk and it is red grease in there, but there is plenty of air space as in the cavity isn't packed full. The grease coming out is black in color, feels and smells like normal grease. I'd say I get an equivelant of half a pump of grease out if I run it for an hour. I took the belt off and the bearings feel good. No coolant leaking anywhere that I can detect. |

Strange, have installed aftermarket seals in the hub with no problem. Didn't install backwards though. Can you tell if it has a gasket behind the piece the fan bolts to? |

It is leaking past the generator pulley groove where it is in line with #7 on the print.

I'm guessing the rear oil seal failed and it is getting past the felt washer. |

The you do have seal problem, personally I would not install the seals backward as it would always push out grease when it gets warm. |

The lube manual is clear that there is little grease needed in there. like 2 pumps a year. (look it up as I do not have the manual in hand) but
you probably just need to let it stabilize then clean it once. Jim |
