Time to replace. The new one consists of a screw in hex plug which screws into the block and the heater element. The old plug is round on the outside not hex like the new one. What is the secret to remove that if you can't get a socket on it?

Don't think you have the right heater. There are two types for the 4430. Your old one have a small bolt in the center?

matthies has it right, you have the old style heater.

An inner and an outer piece squeeze down on an O-ring and hold it in the block.

It will come apart and out of the block with some penetrating oil and tapping and more penetrating oil and tapping.

Key #2 is the O-ring.
