Hoping the learned gentlemen on here can help out. Recently purchased a Massey 50E industrial loader tractor. Neat machine - essentially a backhoe with out the hoe. 4x4. Hydraulic shuttle. 3 PTH and full power PTO. To the problem. I bought it knowing it had some issues. The worst of which was the pivot pin for the front axle. The end of the axle would "walk" back and forth several inches. Got it home, took the loader off, removed the "hard nose" and tried to get the pin out. Not a chance. Stripped the rest of the stuff in front of the engine and unbolted the casting that forms the front frame of the tractor. $500 at the machine shop later and a manual in hand I am ready to put it back together. The shop manual says the the bottom 2 bolts (2 bolts and 1 nut each side of the tractor) need to be shimmed to provide 0.005" clearance between the support and the engine. There weren't any shims when I took it apart. What are the shims accomplishing? Where do I measure the .005"?
