fuel tank and carb

Good evening. I just took the tank off of a recently purchased super c. The tank an lines are so full of sludge that nothing will flow through it. the fuel that was in the tank was drained when I took the tank off. The carb was full of rust and white powder. It is a carter car 0-653 i believe. My questions are, what is the best thing to clean the sludge out of the tank? As for the carb, is it worth putting a kit in or just buying a zenith and being done with it? I dont want to make this a show tractor. Just functional. I have seen carbs on amazon for 50 bucks but dont know if it is worth the hassle. Cleaning the tank right now is my main concern. Thanks

Buy a gallon or two of E-85. Or a pint of Everclear you can always use that! and see if it cuts the goop. if so it might that a few gallons to cut it all out, but it will be a good solutinn. Pun intended. Jim

Myself i have found steaming them works the best. But not everyone has a steamer.

Carter iUT work fine , provide throttle shaft is with in blue print , .001 clearance or less with smooth rotating . You can’t have air leaking in any where it will affect performance. .Do you have cast iron horn or aluminum? , it get my parts from Morgan McDonald in Georgia. Soak it in gum out. Cleaning test all orfaces with air hose,
I find the Carter’s to start the super c faster than the zenith with out choke .
I use a vacuum gage to tune it. 18 to 22 steady needle ,If less than that and unsteady needle you got other issues l. Good luck

it would for the not too bad tanks, as the water is not all that hot . they would sure be frowning on the gas smell. those hotsy pressure washers with steam sure work good. my brother has one and we spent couple hrs working on a tank from a grain truck that had gas sit in it for 25 years . finally got it clean

Got 90 percent of the junk out. Surprisingly it wasn't very rusted. I'm working on getting all the sludge on the other side of the baffle out now. As for the carb. I bought a cheap one on Amazon to see if the tractor will even run before I overhaul the carter carb. The old tractor is not seized but has been sitting alot longer than I was told. The waterproof is seized and a quarter sized hole in radiator. And now wiring left on it.

our farmall bn had a similar problem, floating sludge. My fix was to take the tank off, turn it up side down put the garden hose in the fill hole as far as I could, let it run for about 1/2 hour shake the tank and repeat. left the tank up side down, in the heat of the day. Then pour in kerosene [ about a quart] with bottom hole plugged and cap on fill hole shook it around in all directions then emptied out of fill hole, let dry out reinstalled >> no further difficulties.
