First fitment of Bosch FU4 magneto to Farmall F12 Good to have a local engineering shop. The new coupler is exactly 20.5mm thick and the slots on one side are narrower than the original to fit the smaller lugs on the Bosch magneto. The tractor will need various other works done before it runs, but this is a good start

Is that coupling from the IH mag, and if so, does it time the same with the Bosch mag, just thicker?

I had the new coupling made same as the one for the IHC magneto except much thicker and narrow slots on the magneto side. From the parts book it looks like the Bosch magneto used the IH coupler, but had a thicker piece between the coupler and the magneto drive shaft. All being well it will time up correctly - something to test on the weekend!

Had the spark control rod made for the Bosch FU-4 magneto. Local engineering shop made this too.
I'm no draughtsman, but the engineer managed to work it all out.
Test fit tomorrow

Hello SadFarmall,

I too have an FU4 BRS 505 magneto that I am fitting to an f-12. This is the optional magneto instead of the IHC F4. I was able to get ahold of a fiber disc coupler, # 12449D from Dwayne Hansford, but the part # 12251d still is a mystery to me. It looks like you simply had an adapter made our of steel.

What are the numbers on your magneto? fu4brs???

Was the FU4 original on your machine? It is my understanding that the Robert Bosch Magnetos were quite often used on export models as they were more easily serviced overseas.

I need to make a spark control rod, as you have done. I was able to get the original engineering drawing for it from Guy Fay. Let me know if you want it, even though it looks like you have it made already.

Did you get your magneto worked on Rudy Callin in Minnesota by any chance?

The numbers on my Bosch magneto are simply FU4 BR and nothing further. Yes, Rudy Calin did rebuild it for me.
The original magneto on the tractor was an IHC F4, but it had been so badly vandalized that it was beyond any hope of repair - someone had removed the magneto with pry bar or similar.
The mystery part 12251 D (magneto coupling block) does the same job for the Bosch magneto as 12740 D does for the IHC E4-A and F4 magnetos. That is the disc with the timing holes in it, you can see on the right side of the picture - between the new coupling and the timing case. I just kept the magneto coupling block from the old magneto. The new spacer had to be machined on one side with narrow slots as the driven plate on the FU-4 magneto has narrower lugs than the IHC magneto.
Yes please, I would be very pleased to get a copy of the original spark control rod drawing - I made mine up by putting the magneto in place and taking measurements as best I could. I also have a couple of Bosch FU-4 books - parts list and an IHC manual for the FU-4A magnetos - 99% identical to the FU-4B.

Sorry, I meant coupler, not spacer

Attached are the engineering drawings.

I just dropped off my mag at Rudy's two days ago for a go through!

Thank you! That is something I am very pleased to see. Bosch magnetos do turn up occasionally here in Australia, but on Farmalls we usually see IHC magnetos or now and then a Lucas magneto. I knew Bosch FU-4 magnetos were a Farmall option and this one wasn't too expensive, so I bought it. I could have fitted a Lucas GA-4 magneto, but they are hard to find with impulse coupling and not many places have parts for them anymore.
