200 converted to 12 volts - ignition problems

Our 200 has been sitting for a couple of years. Got fresh gas in it. Turns over. Has no spark at the points or spark plug.

As soon as it warms up a little, I want to check for voltages and get her running. Since it has been converted to 12 volt system with Delco 1-wire alternator, am I correct in thinking :

A- Battery voltage will be 12
B- Due to the 12-volt conversion, it is now NEGATIVE Ground
C- Voltage on one side of the "Chrysler" resistor should be 12 on the HIGH side ???
D- Voltage on the LOW side of the "Chrysler" resistor should be ???? 6 Volts ???
E- Voltage at the points should be ??? 6 Volts ???

A full charged battery will be 12.6 plus volts.
As for taking voltage reading that is not as easy as it sounds due to open and closed circuits. But all that said the most likely cause of no spark is the common problem with points and sitting a long time. Point tend to be closed when sitting and because of that they corroded and in turn do not conduct power. Clean the point and your very likely to have spark.

Now if just have to take voltage reading well with the point closed and good contact voltage will be low at the coil and resister. Points open you will get battery voltage at the coil and both sides of the resister since the circuit is not completed

I just am going to ask the question that most people here have done one time or another. Did you turn the switch on? Be sure to check power on both sides of the switch.

You probably just need to file and reset the points. They have likely corroded from sitting.

When points are open you should have 12 volts at all locations since there is no current flow. When points are closed it should read approximately 6 volts at side of coil connected to resister, and 0 volts at side of coil connected to distributor.

Check to see that you have power to the coil. Had a recent issue on my Cub where it just quit abruptly. Proved to be the 12 to 6 volt resistor in the system had failed. Got a proper 12 volt "no resistor required" coil and eliminated the resistor from the circuit and the Cub's happy again.

Took points out and gave them a good filing, hot battery, and she started
Running rough, but running. Put the shredder on, and did a little light shredding
Think I'll put a half tank of gas and some Seafoam, and work it hard for a while, see if the sputtering goes away

Be sure the point gap is correct. If to narrow or to wide it can/will run rough

Good catch! Points were at about. 0.040. Gapped them to 0.020. Runs like a top

PS shredded over 3 acres, 4 ft per pass , on about 2 1/2 gallons of gas. Great little tractor. I hate to see her go
