I have been on modern view for many years but if I open classic up at the top of the page it shows me as preferring classic view. Is that only for that individual screen or am I counted as a classic viewer overall?

That's related to an option you can set. If you go to the main forum within classic view (screen that shows all the forums), then click on options, you can select that you prefer modern. How much impact that has now either way, I don't recall. I think that it mostly makes it so the Discussion Forums link goes to modern instead of classic.

I should check that because there is no reason for new users to end up in Classic. It causes them a lot of confusion when they first try to use the system. If that works still, the default should be modern.

Chris
I have conversed with several members of other forums that had attempted to view YT forums that were unaware YT had 2 different views & they shied away because they viewed on Classic view & didn't like the outdated view. One person I conversed with on this subject was just a few days ago.

Preaching to the choir there Wink. Yes, new people who do actually use the forums always have problems because of Classic. If we flipped things so that the default view was Modern, all those problems would go away.

There is a technical reason for that. The biggest problem is that people are fooled into thinking they are logged in with Classic when they aren't. The reason is that it uses old fashioned html pages which were never intended to change frequently (which of course those pages change continuously on classic view even though they are .html pages). ISPs, to save bandwidth, cache the html pages and so you don't see the current version of the various pages and it often can show you to be logged on when you've lost your cookie.

The trick to switching it to having Modern be the default, is getting this option cookie set for all the classic users. Then if we flip the meaning of the option, they will continue to see Classic by default, but new people will see Modern. That would be the ideal. It's non-trivial though. I have to think about that. The problem to correct, is that Classic for the most part, don't have a default cookie set to point them to Classic.

If you could get modern to come up automatically that would be great.
I have modern bookmarked on our computer so it does automatically come up for me. But it would be nice for new people if it went there automatically for them as well.

I agree, it would eliminate a lot of trouble emails I get.
