What's a good option for the 3cyl diesel tractor? I tried 2 of 4dlt from the parts store and both were junk. This tractor has the 1 wire alt conversion from DB electrical and is putting out 14.4v but the batteries are not charging. Part store guy told me they have a lot of problems with this type of battery. He had to order another one that should be in later today. If this one doesn't work I want to replace it with a modern design if possible.

Maybe try a different supplier. I have purchased two 4DLT batteries over the past 4 years from NAPA, and both have been
excellent.

I too have had very poor service from the
4dlt batterys and will not buy another.
I use a pickup battery.
I get these at Fleet Farm. They are low
profile and note how the terminals are
recessed below the top. Not sure of the
group number - 4972?

I modified the tray and hold-down to fit
the battery on this tractor.

On my other tractors I cut down a ratchet
strap which does a neat job of it.

My 3 cylinder 4000 is a gasser, and I went with a pickup truck battery and decided on one with side posts so it couldn't possibly short against the hood. I believe it was a Group 75 rated at 700 CCA. It looks tiny on the battery tray. I think that on a diesel battery tray you could actually fit two of them next to each other and wire them in parallel.

Ive been swapping out the 4DLT s in my tractors for 900 amp Group 49 batteries
This does require a longer ground cable but the Group 49 is a automotive battery with longer 5 year warranty and the ones I get a NAPA cost $20-30 less than 4DLT that only has a 12 month warranty

you do not have to spend all that money on a so called tractor battery[with a short warranty] that just happens to fill the battery tray. we use agm automotive batteries with much better warranties. not much more more expensive ,but well worth it .they
are more resistant to vibrations. ie , we have had one in ford 545a diesel going on 6 years. around 850cca should be plenty.

I've had good luck with 4DLT's, too. Last one I replaced was 6 years old, and I've had them up to 12 years old. I get most of mine at CarQuest.

I make my own with 00 welding cable. Use
solder on ends and then use big shrink
tubing. You can buy ends in lefts, rights
and straights.

I coat every bit of metal that can be exposed to the air with dielectric grease these days. I never had that much of a problem with corrosion years ago until we started getting acid rain around here back in the 80's and since then everything electrical that's exposed to the air seems to corrode much more quickly than it used to. I don't know if it's the humidity in the air that's more acidic, or if things aren't made of as good a quality material than it used to be, but I think that it's probably both.

I use the cheap group 65 from Wal-mart. I haven't had a 4DLT last over a year yet.
