So you guys with 2N-8N-9N's and your rotary mowers how do you install your chains for depth control? Do you put the slotted
brackets on the tractor-on top- or on the mower? Thanks

I put the slotted brackets on either side of the top 3 point connection. Easier to adjust the chains as needed.

Yes, on the top. I also use a 5/8 grade 8 bolt with large washers and two nuts rather than the standard pin.

The 8N has POSITION CONTROL and does not need limiter chains on a mower. Of course if hydraulics are weak and in need if rebuild, it may not sustain the position very well. The 9N & 2N with just Draft Control only may require limiter chains to maintain set height. You can also invest in a ZANE THANG position control device, now copied and sold by Red Rock and others. Zane Sherman passed away a few years ago and the family no longer has any dealings with Ford Tractors nor his devices.

My 8N has very good working position control and I still use limiter chains on my mower. Why have the position control working for hours at a time while mowing? I use the chains simply to give my hydraulics a rest. I just put the control lever all the way down and let the mower hang on the chains.

Here's how the chains are hooked up on my 8N. The lynch pins you see in the chains are a good way to make minute adjustments. Just put a pin through two links. They are also a good way to hold up dangling chain ends.

Agree, I do the same with my 8n when mowing.
