My 8N is 6V positive ground. Started fine last 2 years. Now, I can still mow 2+ hours but when I cut off tractor, it won't turn starter. Voltmeter shows only 5.8 - 6.0 volts at 1500 rpms, but had generator tested and shop says it's charging. If I put a battery charger on it for 10 minutes, tractor starts fine.Amp gauge never moves. Replaced voltage reg., no change. One odd thing, even when it was cranking fine, amp gauge moves to 10+ when headlights turned on.

My suspect is your battery.

How old is it?

They usually come in 2 year, 3 year, and 5 year models.

They pay engineers big bucks so that they fail really close to that.

How old is the battery & the cables? When is the last time you pulled all the cables & cleaned the connections? Some shops can still load test a 6v; most can't, so get a $5 hydrometer & check it yourself.

Thanks. Battery and cables are about 2 years old. I haven't checked the connections since most everything on tractor was rebuilt then. Will check battery.

It's 2 years old. If you crank tractor and open throttle and put voltmeter on battery it shows 5.8 to 6 volts only. I've been told that indicates a problem, but you say it may be the battery? That would sure be easy to fix. Thanks.

Hi Charles, did you polarize the voltage regulator when you put the new one on? if not try that, good luck Paul

Yes, the shop that sold me the regulator showed me how. Thanks for suggesting it, though.

Hi
this may seem odd, but check out your starter relay,(solenoid) on the starter for good connections as well as your starter. could be after running it for 2 or 3 hours, in the hot sun the starter itself is heated to the point of tightening up inside. after 10 min. or so of cool down while charging it may loosen up enough to turn

It seems that the posters have pretty much cover all the logical reasons. I think at this point I would take the wires (one at a time) loose at the voltage regulator and the generator and use your ohmeter to check continuity on each. If your generator has been checked and you installed a new voltage regulator it should show more voltage than you are getting at 1500 RPM. You might check the voltage across the battery while you have the charger on it just to make sure your voltmeter is OK. You could also check battery voltage and armature voltage at the generator when at the 1500 RPMs to make sure they are the same. Good luck - post back when you find it as I am curious.

Charles,
When headlights are turned ON you should read -10 Amps discharge if the tractor is "not" Running. If you are saying that the + 10 amps is when the tractor is running that would suggest that the regulator BAT connection is not connected to the LOAD side of the AMMETER.

I would suggest that you remove the BAT wire from the Regulator and Connect your EXTernal Charger to that wire. You then can use a volt meter to determine what connector/wire is Bad.

If you can Charge the battery and Ammeter shows charging via that wire your problem may be a bad ground @ the regulator

Hope this Helps,
