A friend of mine is looking at a 990. When he drove it, he said the rear-end seemed loud. The owner said it has made that noise since he bought it. He said something about square cut gears ??? Any input would be helpfull.

DB's do whine when on the move. They have straight cut gears in the final drives, which are outwith the rest of the transmission. If it's getting any louder, change the oil in the final drives. The drain plug is the bottom one on the back of the FD casing. Refill through the top plug until the oil just starts to run back out. I've heard of some folks using chainsaw bar oil in the FD's of DB's and Zetors, but I have no idea if this is a good idea or not. I suppose the low flingoff might be a good thing...
Cheers, JV.
