48 8n rebuild

I finally broke down and decided to rebuild (some of) the engine on my 8n. The sleeves appear to be in very good shape so I won't replace them. I dont know if I have .040 or.090 sleeves I cant see any stars or diamonds before or after the serial no.? Really don't want to try to get one out to check if they are ok. The inside dia. of the sleeves are the same right? Does it matter which pistons I use and rings? They are 4 ring pistons...the valves look pretty crispy but are tight ..can I just replace the valves? Any advice is greatly appreciated.. I'll even settle for some verbal abuse from Dell Meister. Oh yeah..what about the rod bearings and all the different sizes?? My serial no. is 8n 64056.

You should be able to tell which sleeves you have looking from the bottom, that is if there is a shoulder on the top of sleeve, as was the case with my 8n. It turned out my 0.090 sleeves got bored 0.040 instead of replacing. At the time the plan was to just re-ring, however I over did the honing and my machinist snarled in disgust, then capitulated to the bore job. You will want to check the bore for taper. A quick and dirty way is to measure the end gap with the ring in the cylinder. Use a piston to square the ring and measure the gap near the top and bottom of cyl (the cyl wears more at top). Or take the block to a machinist who will probably mike it for free. HTH

The early 8n's had .040 steel sleeves. There is a ridge at the top so you have to look from the bottom to tell for sure. Mine is at the machine shop getting new sleeves now. It is S/N 8N232580 and it has .040 sleeves. They were wore to the wear limit so out they come. I would not bore the thin sleeves.

As for pistons I am going back with 3 ring vs the 4 ring that were in it. I am replacing valves and guides also. Have the crankshaft checked to see if it needs to be turned. Mine needed .010 on the mains and .020 on the rods. New bearings are a given while it is apart in my opinon. HTH
