accidently grounded out negitive battery post while putting on battery top tray lost power to starter and distribator cant find problem

First check the battery cables on both ends of both of them. Shorting like that at times brakes the connection there. If there good clean and tight then check the wiring going to the switch because you may have smoked one of those wires. I'm guessing its still 6 volt + ground from what you have said by the way. It helps use help you if you tell us if its 6 or 12 volt and which way its grounded

If it didn't open up the circuit in the battery it has to be in one of the battery cables.
