rear axle seal removal, Case 1194

I got an 1194 (DB) with the right brake starting to chatter a lot, so I pulled the final drive. A little oily, as I suspected. Put new linings on, no problem. But how do I get those seals out?

There"s two of them set together (guess they really didn't want that to leak) sitting in housing, the seals are installed from the back of the housing, so it"s obvious the housing must come out to replace the seals. But I can"t figure out if it"s threaded in to the main axle housing, or it"s press fit, or??? there"s two threaded hole in the flange, but they don"t look like they"re made to be used a jack screws. I"ve had a puller on it an pulled as hard as I dared - nothing. I tried to thread in screws and use a bar to turn it it - nothing. I"m a bit baffled.

I may be just not using enough force, but I"ve used as much as I dare without knowing for sure exactly how it comes apart.

Anyone got any hints?

The 2 screws are jack screws. If you are doing the right hand side did you engage the diff lock and tie down the pedal before you removed the final drive? If not the diff lock coupler will now be in the bottom of the diff housing and you will need to get it back.

hi nebeef the two threaded holes are for a puller a 3/8" or a 1/2" flat bar bolted to it and two jackbolts should take it off,the shop manual says to pack grease between the seals,is it the right side as viewed from the back to the front of the tractor if it is did you wire down the difflock pedal or lever as the difflock sleeve will come out of its position and is difficult to replace.hope this helps tom

Thanks guys, I thought that might be the case (pun intended), but I hate to force things only to figure out how it's *supposed* to work by examining the pieces on the ground! ;^)

Oh, and yes, I blocked the diff lock before pulling the final drive!

It was just as you said, guys... it took 15 minutes to make the jig and 1 minute to pull the housing. :-)
