430 PTO Questions

Trivia question again, (surprise, surprise)....

A while back I posted a thread seeking general information on the 430 CASE, (currently on p. 6), to which Joe Young provided excellent answers.

One thing I am not clear on is the 430 pto situation. I understand the early ones had the "Allis Chalmers" type live pto. Would anyone care to list the blow-by-blow 430 pto options through its ten year production run?

Case had 4 types of pto.

1. Standard - cheapest option, you have to clutch the tractor, stopping movement of everything to put your pto in gear.
The lever behind the seat has a ring built into the handle to pull up on to engage. Piece of junk like a Ford 8N. Can't make a quick stop if running a rotary mower. Push in the clutch and the pto equipment will push the transmission instead of the engine. Try mowing into a fence corner and then stop with this arrangement. This is why all tractors with standard ptos have the grill screens all bashed in.

2. Live pto - available on any 430 with a hand clutch for the transmission plus the foot clutch to stop everything. Same lever behind the seat. Still have to foot clutch the tractor and stop movement of everything to put it into gear, only now you have the option of stopping forward movement of the tractor with the hand clutch and keep the pto spinning. Good for mowing, baling, combining etc. Lets the tractor stop yet keep full power to the pto.

One note on the hand clutch, just before Case quit the hand clutch, the last ones built had the lever repositioned. The late ones were down low near the floorboard and you had to reach down and pull up to engage. The early levers stood straight up and you pushed it forward to engage.
You would also snag your jacket on it getting off and run over yourself if you left the gearshift in gear and the motor running.

3. Independent pto. available on later model 430s. Don't have to ever touch the foot clutch to engage or disengage as it has its own clutch pack behind the tractor. Tall straight lever behind the seat, just lean it back away from yourself to engage. Just jerk it back to disengage. Best thing since sliced bread. Excellent for running a pto auger or wire winder because you never have to mount the tractor to operate it. Just walk over to it and pull. Our Oliver had this way back in '48

4. Independent pto with case-o-matic. Does not apply to the 430. The 430 is the descendent of the 200B and like the 200B, it was never offered with c-o-m. Just wanted to mention it as it works the same as the independent ptos described above, yet if you want I-pto in an early 30 series 530/630, then you need to find one with c-o-m.

One last note, if you have a standard pto and want to change it over to independent, then you also have to change the engine crankshaft as it is splined to run the I-pto directly from the crank. Don't know what else has to be changed or of anyone who has tried it.
