I have a 3020 that is a side console with no diff lock. I was told this was standard equipment on all side console 3020 tractors. Looking to find out if any were built without a diff lock? How to detect if it was removed? How to know if one can be added? In the event the rear end was replaced, is there any way to distinguish a late rear end from an early one for a 3020? Thanks.

Two different diff lock setup for side console 3020's. It's all in the parts section of the JD site.
Serial #'s 150,001 and above are different for the pedals & linkage etc.
Locking diff it's self doesn't change above serial # 123,001.
If you really want a diff lock in there, it's going to take time and money in a 38+ year old machine.
I have often wondered if with enough time and money? If a HD Torsen worm gear locking diff could be transplanted inside an open tractor diff.

Dif lock was an option, and most of the later tractors were kinda automatically ordered with it, along with fenders and 540/1000 pto,and at least 1 remote. Local collector has an original 2520 gas synchro with a fixed tricycle front,no fenders,no remote, no dif lock, a belt pulley, and a drawbar.
It can be added, the trans case has to be drilled/tapped for the oil feed line to pass through it and the differential carrier will have to be changed out for a lock type version. All the parts and lines can be had at a salvage yard

Thanks! My big question was if it was plausible to have a late 3020 without a diff lock and it looks like it is. So does this make it a "rare deere", you know one of those 1 of 22 built with or without a certain option for a given year, gas engine, row crop etc etc........?Smile Thanks again.

The diff lock was an ordered option that wasnt very expensive and hurts their value more than it cost.I have had about 10% of the side counsel tractors Ive bought not have diff lock.I was told the 69 4000 was not available with one.Collectable or not they are sure nice in snow or ice .

Yes, they are not rare, and I think the trans. cases were all drilled and taped for the lines. With the proper stuf they could be added.
