Hey guys..I need help..I am looking to put a 188 diesel or gas in a vac puller.. What do you think?? What other options in a motor swap.. I know I will have to make a adapter plate.. The 124ci just doesn"t have near enough to keep up with the farmall-c"s and the cockshutt 20"s..They all run 160ci combine motors..Getting my butt kicked here in Ohio

You do not have to make an adapter plate but you must put the bell housing up against the block and center it and drill and tap two upper holes in the rear block face to put studs in and drill the lower two corners for those bolts. When we did ours we had the block on the floor so we stood it on end and set the bell housing down on it, centered it in the brass pilot bearing and marked the upper and drilled the lower using the housing as a drill guide for the two lower holes. The flywheel/starter issue must be overcome. It's not a project for the faint of heart. After you build it you will not be allowed to compete in any sanctioned pulls as they do not view it as a legal engine swap although IH combine engines are allowed in their tractors and that swap requires adapter plate mods. mEl

Most of the more advanced VAC pullers I have seen either had a G148 or a 201 combine engine.

mEL the C-153 in a Farmall C is a Bolt in from a tractor but requires a Polit Bearing work from a power unit to bolt in But still Bolts in other than that!

LIKE putting a 148 in a VAC a Bolt in with some slight Mods!

Sounds like the 188 is a "bolt-in" from a tractor as well. Wonder why most clubs won't allow it? (Retoric implied!)

Most of the time it's not necessary to actually see the tractors to tell what brand/color the majority of the rules committeee members pull. You can usually just read the rules and tell the preference. One person's "bolt-in" and another person's "bolt-in" are often the same but somehow end up being different.

It's sort of like following a cop down the interstate at 20mph over the limit. Is he going to flip on the lights and pull you over or not?

Only problem I can see with the 188 is CASE never made nor offered anything for a VAC with a diesel engine.

I can tell you what happened on that. I actually started doing just that a couple of years back. Two county deputies passed me one day last year on the 4-lane, and when I pulled out and got behind them they were running 90 with no lights or sirens on. I followed them for about 5 miles and both of them lit up and started slowing down. Of course, I did too. They kept slowing down until they and I got down to the speed limit. One of them motioned for me to pull over so I stopped. When he approached the window and asked why I was in such a hurry, I told him in my best acting-excited voice that the sherrif and his wife were good friends of mine, our school resource officer, another county deputy, was a good friend of mine and my brother is the chief of police in a nearby town, and I was just concerned that they might need help AND I notice that both of you guys had forgotten to turn on your lights and sirens. Then I said, "Come on! Let's go get 'em! I'm right behind you!" He just smiled and walked back to his car.

1031D, there were thousands of 188 gassers built, 630 gassers and combine and general use power units. mEl

188 and 201 are the same bacic blocks and require the same Major work to install !

These blocks are Longer and will alter wheelbase and share no parts with the VAC block, The early 148 and the VAC 124 share most major parts like Head etc and Bolt on from one block to another!

On the Red side the Combine/power unit blocks are the same as a IH 444 and started life as a farmall A type block was inproved and made larger as years went buy until it went from a 113cid up to a 153cid and shares most major parts and is like putting a 148cid in a VAC !

I Have Both Brands and Putting a 188/201 in a VAC is like Putting a 350 Farmall engine in a C only smaller (175 cid) and they would Gripe about that also!
