I have a 1978 model case/db. yesterday the lift quit working. I was tilling and it worked fine for the first 30 minutes or so then quit. No movement at all. Does anyone have any ideas where to start.

Do the remotes still work?
Is the oil milky?
Does the yellow warning light on the dash work(hydraulic bypass light)? has it been staying on?
Have you ever changed the hydraulic filter?

have a 990 case 1979 tractor serial#990/1/11099158
ive tried yesterdays tractor but they cant get one i need a tach cable 5/8 by 7/8 can anyone point me in the right direction also the cable is 49and a half inches long

Is your Tach an "icknield"????
Case lists all the cables still. depending on the serial, $30-50 I think yours is part # K955274 based on the serial number you gave me( Double check that # with the dealer.). Should be about $35, Case calls it 48 1/2" long but that probably doesn't include the ends that stick out.

The fluid in not milky the fluid and filter were changed maybe three seasons ago. the indicator light in not on, however i don't know if it is operational or not. the fluid and filter have maybe 300 hrs on them. The lift quit allof a sudden, one round it was working properly the next round it would not work at all.
Thanks for any info you have, I just hate to tear into it blind. My dad bought this tractor new and the lift system has never been worked on. The only time I know of the lift cap being off was to replace some transmission bearings about 15 years ago.

Do the remotes work? Assuming they do, your problem is probably in the selectamatic valve. Might be a bit a crud(most likely a paint chip) floating around the hydraulic system got stuck in the hold valve(first place I'd look).
stand behind the tractor
Just to the rear of the 3 point hitch lever you will see a kidney shaped plate about 3" across which is held on by 2 screws. Remove screws and plate.
Under that cover you will see 2 aluminum plugs with slotted heads. remove the left one by turning it counter clockwise. Don't drop it, it is spring loaded from behind. remove cap and spring. the valve itself is behind the spring. It needs to move freely in that bore.use a tapered wooden dowel wedged into it to remove it. Make sure it moves freely. If stuck in the up position you won't have any 3 point hitch. Don't polish it, just clean it.
You will probably have to make a tool to fit the aluminum cap that holds the valve in. I have a tire iron that I re-ground for just that purpose.

Try the CaseIH website. They have a great parts breakdown on almost any David Brown out there. They also have a dealer locater.

Hi RG your diagnosis of the hydraulic fault was spot on correct, don it many times. The word Icknield comes from a Roman road wich crossed England many years ago. MJ
