Have a 4020 syncro that will not go into 1st, 2nd, 4th or sixth gear. It will go into all other gears nicely. Tranny is quiet. Tractor has been sitting for 5 years. What could be the possible problem?

check the adjustments between the shifter rods and the shift quadrant. sounds like they're binding on the low range side.
SHIFTER LINKAGE ROD ADJUSTMENT
1. Unconnect both shifter rods from shift quadrant (under dash)
2. Place both speed range (upper) and speed change (lower) arms in the uppermost position making sure that both detents are properly engaged (these are on the right side of trans below platform)
3. Place shift leverin sixth and eighth speed neutral position (lever to left and midway between 6 and 8 on shift decal) hold lever up slightly to provide slack
4. Adjust speed change shifter rod by turning yoke unntil pin fits freely and reconnect.
5. Place shift lever in any reverse speed.
6. Adjust speed range shifter rod yoke until pin fits freely and reconnect.
check shift points for proper operation

If this doesn't work then you're going to have to remove the platform and trans cover to see why the low range side of the speed range shifter isn't working (synchro piled up?)

Had same problem after mechanic rebuilt my 3020 trans. There is a stop screw inside the trans that did not get tightened. Believe it was to stop the shifting fork from overtraveling forward. Had to take off trans top plate and was obvious. Adjusted bolt and tightened lock nut and has been good to go for ten years+.

I agree with what mechresto recommended or the shifter drum bushing and shims in dash are sloppy and need some attention. My statement rests on the fact if the trans syncronizers aren't worn out.

Jim,

Is there any way to check the movement of the trans shifter arms, down on the side of trans, to verify if there is an internal problem or not? Would you have to disconnect the linkages up top first?

You can check all this stuff,,then split it and replace the sychronizer....

Do you think some hard shifting problems can be repaired sometimes by rebuilding the shift quadrant and adjusting the shift rods. True if checking both above mentioned things plus clutch free travel adjustment doesn't cure hard shifting(grinding) then a tractor split is in order.

Tim and some other techs are more qualified to answer your question but yes IIRC the shift rods must be disconnected to check shift arm travel on the side of trans.

On old 4020's with no history of repairs "most" of the time loss of the lower or higher range speeds are because of bad sychro's...

The tractor runs great! It shifts easily in all the other high side gears. The shift quadrant is nice and tight. Not worn and sloppy. Could something be stuck because of sitting for 5 years?? The clutch is very good. Pto works good like it should

From your diagnoses it sounds to me that Tim is correct, worn out syncronizers. I think you'll need to do as Roger stated earlier to remove floor plate and trans top cover and have a look at the top trans shaft.
