5040 starter - maybe not?

I'm back to working on my 5040 again where I left off and I'm wondering now if it is isn't the starter after all. After taking the dash apart, new cables, neutral safety OK, bench test OK, when re-installed it only makes a solid clunk once or twice without turning. Even across the +/- on the starter terminals just a clunk, fire and a red hot screwdriver immediately.
Friend of mine suggested maybe a hydraulic lock in one of the cylinders - maybe injector leaked down filling a cylinder with diesel fuel? Possible? Best way to test? (Crankcase has normal oil level by the way)

The original starters on those gave us troubles almost from brand new. Seems like there was an alternative, maybe a Bosch?
Otherwise you should be able to turn the engine over somehow- screwdriver on ring gear- something on the front pulley- tow in high gear........

I've had starter off 3 times now & as you probably know its a real pain - may have to bite the bullet and try to move the ring gear, though. How much risk of me bending/breaking a connecting rod by pulling it? Would loosening all 3 injectors release any diesel fuel, if there, inside the cylinder(s)?

Generally if you tow something and it doesn't want to turn, a tire just skids.
Yes- loosening and/or pulling injectors would be a sure way of telling what's down in there.

If it has individual glow plugs, unscrew, and pull them out, one at a time, trying to turn the motor over, after pulling one. That way, you could ID the cyl, in question, and not have to remove the good injectors.

My dad bought a 5040 new and from day one that thing was a pain to start after rebulding the starter twice I put on an bosch and never had problens again with the old starter sometime you would think that the engine was locked up.
