This subject may have been beat to death and excuse me if it has, but I am having some trouble with the hydraulic drive on my "new" 444. I think its a late 60s model with the hyd imp lift on the right side by your knee. Anyway, when (most noticable) in high range you move the lever to go forward or reverse the lever needs to move really far to get the tractor to move. When you start moving it you get the normal groan like its loading the pump but you keep pushing further really slowly and then it all of a sudden catches and goes with a bad jerk. I looked at the linkages like was explained, and theres only 2 places where wear could occur. Those look really good. What I do notice is that the spool needs to move a good 3/8 of an inch from "neutral" to where the jerk occurs, almost like theres a "dead spot" in the valve. This happens in mainly the forward direction but not as bad in reverse. does anybody have any ideas what may be happening or is this just the common wear that is explained.

The obvious, did you check the oil level in the hydraulic resevoir?!?

Have a good look at your switch under the dash where your travel lever moves most likely that plastic switch is worn. jc

Oil level is about half full or more. I had the plastic neutral switch off weeks ago and got that to work as when I got the tractor there was no ground to the solenoid. So that fixed the no start.

For reference the tractor serial number is 9645209.

I was using the tractor tonight and it had the same jump when the lever was moved past the same point. Its almost like theres a dead spot in the valve. The linkage has a ball and socket at the bottom of the selector shaft and at the spool valve the rod is bent 90* and cotter pinned on both sides. I then moved the travel lever to full forward and clamped the spool valve to the valve body and tried to move the control lever. No play in the linkage that I can see or feel.

How full must the hydraulic reservoir be? I just dont want a mess if it decides to burp over.

Are you using 20w-40 motor oil??? They usually act as you are describing when someone uses hydraulic oil.

Sounds like the linkage is sloppy. I have a 195 and 446. Also, hydraulic fluid is not a good idea in these. Ingersoll will overcharge you for a few quarts of 20W-40 or most of us use Rotella 15W-40.

OK, Im going to try changing the hydraulic oil and filling to the proper level with the proper oil. I will report back with what happens.
