Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

I got the new filter installed. I didn't see any shaving in the old filter and old oil. I drove the loader to a curb and tried to go up the curb while lifting a 2k lb log AND while I retracted the tilt cylinders fully which caused the engine to almost stall. The mast still lifted the log...

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

I agree. The hydro unit was drained when I removed the engine. I refilled it with the new engine but didn't change the filter because I couldn't find one anywhere. I now have a new filter coming. I wondered if air is in the lines too

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

I put the old filter in a coffee can and plan to cut it open (it's a canister filter element) when the replacement filter arrives. I need to make sure it fits before I destroy the old one. I inspected the clutch cable operation when the engine was out. It's basically in an "always engaged"...

I'll feel pretty foolish if it's the clutch and I didn't check it before I installed the engine. This was not an easy install.

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

I will check the pump for the connectors. Once I receive and install the filter, I'm going to try driving up to a curb and stall the machine while trying to pick up 4000 or 5000 lbs and see if it will pick it up while I'm stalled. I would assume it wouldn't pick it up if it's the clutch...

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

The old engine was diesel and the tachometer didn't work. I can hook up a tachometer at some point but it really sounded like the rpms were pretty high. Do you know typical rpm range for Ford gas 172? This is a frustrating one. So many possibilities and factors

Those manuals are for a different model skid steer. Mine is an omc/mustang 770. I have a parts manual and an operators manual

I didn't see any metal shavings in the filter. It was pretty clean.

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

I didn't remove the clutch or pressure plate. I bought a used engine that came with clutch and pressure plate. I didn't take the pressure plate or clutch off because I didn't have an alignment tool when I would go to put it back on. They can be separated. Ford 172 gas engine

Yes there is a small Cessna pump coming off the gearbox. I believe it operates the other hydraulic functions, cylinders etc. Or does it also have something to do with propulsion? The hydraulic cylinders have plenty of power. The old filter isn't bad at all. The oil appeared normal

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

Thats it but mine is green. I've had the Machine 14 years. It was barely able to climb onto my gooseneck trailer a few years ago. But since the engine switch, the power is way down. Full throttle gas 172 ford engine. It is an actual clutch on the flywheel. I didn't take the pressure plate...

Yes, it has a clutch. I have the manual but it isn't very informative. Basic stuff.

Owatonna / Mustang 770 wheel loader weak hydrostatic drive

Hi, I have a 1978 omc mustang 770 loader that barely creeps up the slightest incline or up a small curb. I just replaced the Ford 172 diesel engine with a Ford 172 gas engine. I drained the hydraulic fluid amd replaced with tractor hydraulic fluid from the local hardware store. I didn't...

Ford 172 diesel squealing noise, no oil pressure, loose harmonic balancer bolt, and white smoke out of breather

Thanks for all the help with this engine dilemma turned engine swap. The gas engine seems to run great. I just ordered the new water pump and a thermostat. I also need to plumb in the oil pressure gauge to the engine block and get the temp sensor hooked up. Again, couldn't have done it...

Ford 172 diesel squealing noise, no oil pressure, loose harmonic balancer bolt, and white smoke out of breather

Just to confirm, I have the electric fuel pump bypassing the mechanical fuel pump and I plan to remove the mechanical pump and block it off.

Ford 172 diesel squealing noise, no oil pressure, loose harmonic balancer bolt, and white smoke out of breather

Yet, another question. The gas engine has a bolt instead of a temperature sensor in the head. I pulled the sensor from my diesel head but it is not the same diameter as the gas head. Does anyone have a part number I can order that would be the smaller diameter? Thanks!

Ford 172 diesel squealing noise, no oil pressure, loose harmonic balancer bolt, and white smoke out of breather

I didn't pressure wash it before I installed it. I leaned it out slightly and it runs pretty well now. I'll check the distributor and points tomorrow. It's been a long week with this loader/engine

Ford 172 diesel squealing noise, no oil pressure, loose harmonic balancer bolt, and white smoke out of breather

I have everything wired correctly now. The engine does not run well under load or at higher rpm's. I changed the spark plugs. I'm using fresh gas. I sprayed carb cleaner around the intake manifold to check for leaks. What else should I check out? I tried to upload a video but it says the...
