4020 axle question

I have a 4020 synchro, can I use a power shift axle housing off of a 4020 as a replacement? And if so, why when I am looking for a replacement does it specify 18 minutes ago, (knowing there is a size difference of the axle diameter). Could it be replaced with 4010 axle housings?

Would have to look at the parts book, but I think the 4020 axle assemblies are the same. There. MIGHT be a serial number break/change though. The 4010 has a different planetary speed than the 4020 does. If I recall the 4010 is 4.33 planetary and the 4020 is 4.75, a bit slower.

Neither 4010 rear axle housing shows to fit any other tractor than a 4010. Axle mounting gasket is same for 4010,4020,4430 & 40 series rowcrops built for sales in European countries. Outer axle seal part # RE31701 fits same models in photo below

Remember hearing pullers use 4010 housing because of weight and maybe gear ratio of gears. Think the mounting flange is not as wide either.

I think all 4020 axle housings are the same. Wasn't the 4000 the same as the "new" 4010 replacement? They used '"leftover parts" to build the cheaper model 4000. 4010 axle housings and axles were lighter. Many people say a 4000 had 3020 rear housings, not true. 4000 did have lighter 3pt parts, may have been 3010 or 3020. I had a 4000 P.S, still have 3 3020 P.S tractors....James

Thank you for all the input! I guess I panicked a little, I couldn’t cross reference the part numbers as I was hoping, the casting numbers don’t match 4020 with 4010 so I asked. Had I taken a minute and thought about it I would’ve remembered that a guy I knew did exactly what Mattheis said and put 4010 axles on a 4230 or 4240 for pulling. I never knew why just that he said that’s what they do…
I had no clue about the powershift vs synchro though. I thought I remembered the trans housings being different so I didn’t know if the axles would work or not.

IIRC,4020 used 3 3/8 axles. 4010(as well as 3010/20;720/30 ;4000,others) used 3 1/8 axles.Houseings? I dont know. Look at the parts books, compare numbers. Talk to your local JD dealer.
