Possibly is a scale weight. Used for checking the accuracy of scales on farms and at grain elevators.

My 50 pounder has no groove, but is similar in size. If this one has a positioning notch or projection it could be for the beam wt. Jim

I had 2 50pounders like that, and one a marking on it OTIS Elevator weights. evidently.

Every 5 years elevators in the US are tested by loading 125 percent of their
rated load to make sure the service brake can hold. The emergency safety brakes
are then applied at rated speed and rated load. 50 lb iron test weights are
used. I believe that is what you have.
