Ok I got a 12volt coil. and it came with a inline resistor. havent got the alt. or wireing all on the tractor, but was wanting to see if it would start. I put new points and cond. cap, coil and resistor and plugs on it. run a hot wire to resitor, than to coil. and jumped it at starter. would crank great but no fire. So I took dist. off check points, sit on 15 gap. no wires grounded. would not leave wire hooked up for more than 5 or 10 sec. at a time didnt want to burn up points. Do you guys think the dist. is shorted inside. I bought this off of ebay cause the 2n didnt have one when I bought it. Think I should change the breaker plate in it? Any thoughts would be great. I just have put in so much time on this, I would just like to hear an idle out of it. Would give me an extra jumpstart to keep going...lol..Anyway thinks guys for all the help u have gave me so far on this sweet thing I bought.

This isn't "rocket science". Find out what's wrong, instead of simply "throwing parts at it"

Start by taking the distributor off, and troubleshooting the points/ breaker plate assembly with an Ohmmeter.

Check continuity from the special brass screw at the top that the coiled "spring thingy" beeath the coil sets down into (coil removed) to ground.

Points "open"... NO continuity from the brass screw to gound (INFINITE resistance).

Points "closed"... Continuity from the brass screw to ground (almost NO resistance).

ANY other results indicate either a short to ground, bad points, or a broken brass strip leading to the points, or RARELY, a shorted condensor.

Post back with what you find with your Ohmmeter expedition!

Check for continuity twixt the top of the coil and ground with the coil mounted on the distributor, points closed (and the distributor off the tractor). You might need to stretch out that springy thing on the bottom of your coil so it makes contact with the screw in the distributor. While you are checking continuity in the distributor and coil you can also check for points opening and closing --> turn the drive tang and see iffn the resistance goes from very low to infinite as the points open and close.
