Can a 666, 686 diesel engine bolt right up in a 656 gas for a re power job or is this a big deal. Will the same clutch work(gear drive not hydro) Also what is a good source for a used/rebuilt 686 engine for the swap and what do they run cost wise. Thanks.

You will need the later style frame rails and I think frame shims for the front bolster for the difference in frame width.I would be shopping for a late 715 combine german diesel.

I would think that if you can get everything between the bell housing and steering bolster off the 666 or 686, then it should be a bolt-in. That's engine, front and rear engine mounts, frame rails.

If your 656 is in good condition it might cost less to simply trade tractors for the one you want.
