Well...I know what it is and so does everyone. A test indicator. Also a kinda nifty specialized holder for it that attaches to an indicator stand. I have never seen one like this...dial and digital yes, but not like this one. It says .020 inch, CAN PATD 1936 on the side shown. Other side says Gladwin, Flint MI US Pat No 1,994,497 2,121,848 .020 inch. So a couple of patent numbers. The little red pointer on the gauge always points to one side. Anyone ever see one like this? Was in a tool box I bought today.

Maybe used to square a vice on a vertical mill.

I find pleasure in reading patent drawings and searching old stuff. Especially the detail the inventor went through not only to design this, but get it manufactured and marketed. I wonder what the +/- accuracy of this was.
