Kinda a silly question but can I use a 3pt auger/PHD on a tractor that doesnt have down pressure hydraulics?

Most folk let the bit get dull and then do all sorts of things to force the auger down, some pretty dangerous.

A heavy duty hyd driven auger on a skid steer is built to take some pressure.

But the typical 3pt version is supposed to auger itself down not be forced into the ground.

Usually my auger will thread it's self into the ground every few holes and shear the pin, fun.

There are actually very few tractors around that can provide hydraulic downforce on the 3-point hitch. There are limited applications where it would be a good thing but many situations where it would present significant drawbacks so the vast majority of hitches are designed to simply free float when lowered.

If the augur is sharp it will feed itself and you actually have to lower it a bit at a time to hold it back.
