Most folk let the bit get dull and then do all sorts of things to force the auger down, some pretty dangerous.

A heavy duty hyd driven auger on a skid steer is built to take some pressure.

But the typical 3pt version is supposed to auger itself down not be forced into the ground.

There are actually very few tractors around that can provide hydraulic downforce on the 3-point hitch. There are limited applications where it would be a good thing but many situations where it would present significant drawbacks so the vast majority of hitches are designed to simply free float when lowered.
