(quoted from post at 07:40:49 10/01/23) I have windows XP on a 30 year amish computer I
use for business records.

I can transfer those files to a second generation
amish computer that uses Windows 7 but I cannot
go the other direction. Win 7 doesn't transfer
back to XP.

For backup I use a thumb drive to store 25 years
of business records. Both my amish computers are
connected to a printer.
If my oldest computer dies, I can use my newer
computer to print contracts and send my CPA my
business records.
move files both ways on WIN XP and WIN 7 regularly and did so in the last 5 minutes. Set "Share folder on network" AND set "allow network users to change my files"

hard drive docking station. It plugs into your new computer's usb port; You just take the hard drive out of the old computer and drop it into the docking station. (like a 8 track tape :) It will then show up on your new computer as a new drive.
