Yes, when I grew up in our old family home after the war and into the 60's, we had the old gravity type natural gas furnace and no electrical hookup. I think by the late 50's my dad had a thermostat installed for on-off heat control, that was quite a blessing I remembger in the winter time. All the heating ducts (huge things) took up a lot of basement room and they funned upstairs and emptied the heating air near the inside of the ustairs rooms. The return air vents to the basement (just passive openings actually in the floors with no pipes) were on the outside of the upstairs rooms. Today things are opposite.
