Slatted plow

Just curious. Anybody here ever use a plow like this? I
dont think Ive seen any photos of one on this board.

It was used in heavy clay soils. To reduce friction and make it a little easer to pull.

They lay the furrows over really nice.
With less lumps sticking up on damp clay ground.

A couple of old cousins who farmed together here had one. They said in light sand, it would go right through the slats.

My dad has used one for over 60 years. It works great in our soil.

No, but I sure wish we had one to try back when we used a moldboard plow. It could be a challenge getting a plow to scour here.

I used it to build up our terraces for years before I got a bigger tractor and JD moldboard. I always thought the Case did a better, smoother job. But the bigger tools did the job faster.

My FIL sometimes used a whirlwind, but I thought they left it too fluffy and settled too much.

We used slat moldboard plows for many years. We have heavy clay ground. They pull better than a solid and scour quicker when starting out for the season. Always had IH plows until 1967 when we bought a 1650 Oliver and semi-mounted plow. That one was a solid moldboard but pulled easy.

That is a Case M series plow with slat bottoms.

Have a pair of IH slat bottoms. Bought them in muck country
and was told that they made plowing muck soil easier.
