Coming home from the field the other day my 2000 3cyl with generator shucked the fan belt. What I don't understand was why a couple minutes later the generator was still spinning, even after the tractor was shut off! New belt and all is fine but confused about the thing spinning without a belt.

Generator was "motoring" because of stuck cutout relay points inside the voltage regulator.

It became an electric motor.

If still trying to spin but new belt preventing it, soon gen or wiring will smoke

I ran it today with new belt up to operating temperature as I was checking my heat gauge on the tractor vs a hand held one with a probe. I did not see any smoke. anywhere. I will watch carefully the nex time and feel the generator and wiring.
