    Electric Start John Deere H

I agree with red. You will do more harm changing it to 12 volt and honestly do more damage and spending more money in the long run. I would fix the 6v system.

    Engine blocks over the years

No the engines did not leave the factory without sleeves.

    Converting a JD 40S to a 12 volt system

Why convert it? Our 40S spins over fast and charges fine on 6v. 12v conversions in my experience are just a fix for a bigger issue.

    Magneto question

There were a couple different types. My 39 B had a system on it where the bracket straddled the nose cap and there was a bolt on pulley for the generator. My friend had a system on his 35 A with two lights and a tail lamp. Another had a generator pulley on the open fan shaft of the 34 A.

    Magneto question

There was an optional lighting kit for early hand start tractors. There was a bolt on pulley and a generator that put out enough power to run a head lamp attached to the front of the tractor.

    Magneto question

Hand start battery ignition? You wouldn’t be able to turn it over fast enough. You need that spring trip that mags have. I have never understood why people modify things. 6volt systems work just fine if done right and mags are wonderful ignition systems. I see more questions and problems about...

    Magneto question

You will need to get it apart and start the cleaning process. I use mineral spirits and electric contact cleaner.

    Too many tractors

Sounds like heresy to me…but in all seriousness yes there is a law of diminishing returns. I have 10 currently. They all run and drive. 3 are done and what I want them to be. The rest need some sort of restoration or paint etc. I have enough to keep me busy for the rest of my life. In the end...

Oil problems in the old model B

I had loss of oil pressure and found a split in the oil line running out of the rh main bearing near the coupling . I agree with wore out and try to pressurize the system. I was able to see it better while I was replacing the block.

2N basket case/ Just shoot me.

Oof. I saw that thing on eBay. Hope you got a decent deal on it. The red flags were flying high on that one. I hate to part out or scrap anything. Take the engine out and rebuild or replace it. I got a 2N at auction not running. Got it going and the breather smoked like a locomotive. Crank and...

    Ford 9n oil in coolant

I thought I had oil in the coolant until I found the rusted frost plug behind the starter. The PO dumped so much stop leak into the engine that slime was looking like oil. I rebuilt the engine and apparently didn’t get it all flushed out. Don’t think this is the case here but it is a possibility...

Locating serial # of a JD 4440 if SN tag is AWOL

Two Cylinder Club may have the files on hand but after the 30 series the ship registers were digital and not paper books. If you want the number there would be a $60 fee and the wait of 16 weeks the woman @ 2 cyl is claiming it takes to do the research.

Locating serial # of a JD 4440 if SN tag is AWOL

There is a way to look up the serial number with the engine number.

    Question on selling price

$200 is low but they are not worth much more than $500-700 non running. The MM's don't have a huge following like the IH or Deere stuff and parts are hard to find...but they are a neat machine. Where are you located?
