Hello,

I hope that you can help us. My neighbor has a Case tractor, backhoe, bucket that is probably of vintage 1950 . I am trying to help him identify the model & serial number so that we can replace the power steering assembly.

I have been told that the s/n is stamped on the left-hand side of the drivers position where the engine and transmission bolt together, but I cannot seem to locate it!@*!

What I have found is the following:

G1096 cast on the transmission housing

D-121 legend plate on the instrument housing

31-4073080 on the backhoe hydraulic lever control housing

Model 31; No: 4071456 on a legend plate driver left side

The owner believes that it is a 540 or a 740 model???

What am I not seeing? Please advise me so that we can finally get this beast of a tractor steerable for a 76 year old man that's me. Lol

Thank you kindly for any assistance.

Richard

Model D's never came with power steering. The first factory install was on the Case 400 built in Racine in 1955. You have an after market unit and will have to figure out the maker. Larry

The g1096 from a transmission is from a 210 or 310 utility tractor and the Model 31 may represent a model 31 loader on a 310 or 530. With out a picture this a guessing game. Does it have any kind cylinder on the front axle?

Thank you all for the prompt reply and suggestions. As requested, I am attaching pics of the Case tractor/BH and the legend plate I found on the left hand side of the tractor. Note that this tractor had hydraulic steering ability at one time; I found two unattached hyd hoses lying on the front axle...The owner has assured as such. There is no front cylinder to be found...

If we cannot discern the true identity of this model/serial number, perhaps you could refer me to a supplier specialist that might be able to assist us further. We don't want to risk purchasing power steering components that do not allow form, fit and function.

Again, I am impressed with all of your efforts to assist. Regards, Richard

This is my first time using this forum and attaching pics; there may be duplicates....Richard

It kinda looks like a 310B but the pic is too far for details. You need to post some closer pics of the tractor sides, dash, and the front of the front axle. Are the loose hoses connected to a belt drive PS pump mounted on the top front of the engine? It would be helpful if you could lift the loader full up out of the way for the pics but do what you can.

Eureka! We found the serial number of subject Case tractor/BH/FEL it is 2008297 and the owner believes it is circa 1965, model #530. Contrary to internet postings, the s/n was located on the passenger side (right side) below the starter. It was totally camouflaged with dirt & grease.
Now we can begin the hunt for a supplier of the components necessary to provide power steering once again for the old girl. There is an existing gear driven power steering pump located on the right side in front of the engine - we suspect it has failed. There is no ps cylinder or any other connecting apparatus other than the existing hydraulic hoses.
As requested, I am attaching some more pictures to further confirm identification. I will inquire of the advertiser within this forum for help in obtaining replacement components.
Thank you all again for the timely responses, suggestions and thoughts.

Not a 310B. You have found an engine serial nr not a tractor serial nr. The tractor model/seral nr tag, or the holes
where it was originaly attached, likely in the area of the right side of the steering cowling.

Hello Joe,
Alas, no joy...there is no label to be found in the area you so kindly depicted. However, please do not give up on me as the owner knows of a local person who has the exact year/make & model of the tractor in question. As soon as I get that information, I will be back in touch. One would assume that his serial/model number would be close enough to identify any parts necessary to return power steering to our machine.

BTW: Are you affiliated with YS Tractor and are you a source for replacement parts thru them?

So hang in there as the hunt is on here in Montana, Richard

No I am not affiliated with YT, just a member of this forum. I have experience repairing antique tractors, mostly prior to 1964. For YT parts sales for your tractor go to the top of this page and click on CASE. If they do not have the part you need, I or someone else may be able to provide another possible source.

Just looking at your tractor pics I can not positively identify the model but it looks to be 1965 or later with hydrostatic PS with 2 cylinders similar to this exploded parts view. If so the PS pump is gear driven off the cam gear and pumps all the time the engine is running. I would hope some provision has been made to circulate the pump output as the pump can be damaged beyond repair if run dry for extended period. I don't have hand-on experience with this steering system but someone here should have.

This parts view for a mid 1965 & later 530 series tractor is just to ID if it is hydrostatic steering and may not be identical or correct part nrs for your model tractor. If you can ID your tractor model the correct parts manual should be at one of the links below or I may be able to find the original parts manual at a vendor's site.
