In your preferences, did you check "Threaded View" ??
If checked and you hit the reply box of the post you are wanting to respond to, your post will indent under the replied to post.
Using The reply box at the bottom will not reply to anyone in particular not be indented.

It shouldn't be. The default setting is like Classic, where responses are placed directly below the posts they're in response to, indented so you can tell that they're a response.

Did you come out of the womb on a dead run? No. You stumbled around a lot before you found your feet.

Fortunately this won't be nearly as difficult. You've already got a leg up in that you have previous forum experience.
