JD 404 serial numbers

I recently purchased a JD 4020 with, I believe the 404 6 cylinder engine, there is no serial number plate on the engine that I can find. The only number I have found is stamped in the block on the left front top corner just below the deck and is 23E164019 is this a known place for a serial number to be found and could this be that number? The tractor is a 1967 and could of had an engine change(s) during it's lifetime, I understand these model engines where used in multiple types of JD equipment of that era. The area said to have the engine number originally placed on an 4020 shows no evidence of there ever being an ID plate there. The tractor serial# on the rear is T231P 159734R if that helps. Thanks for any light you can shine on this issue.

Great thank you, that should tell JD everything they need to know about the arraignment of the engine then, correct? ie: replacement parts and any other information they may need?

Maybe the casting number by the starter.

Thanks I'll find that and keep it with the stamped number on the block under the generator.
