Outrageous MAF sensor change cost/rant

Local KIA dealer charges $192.50 per hour and get this I had already done a scan and knew what it needed but they said they had to do their own scan $85 for 5 minutes of testing. Then they wonder why I will never buy a new car from them again.

I was stationed at Ft. Polk, La. in 1970. I drove my 66 International pickup from Minnesota after Christmas break. I wasn't there too long and had a clunking noise that turned out to be a U-joint. I didn't have nuch for tools and had never changed something like that. There was an IH dealer in the nearest to the post town that sold machinery and trucks. Brought it there to be fixed, super nice people and they didn't charge nuch at all. The good old days.

Would you want someone coming in off the street telling you how to do your job? No? Well neither do they.

What if your "scanner" missed something, and they didn't fix it? Dealer scanners are far more capable than your $39 Harbor Freight doohickey.

Never met a mechanic that wasn't the BEST on the Planet. Same with welders, machinists..........you name it. Problem is........ALL of them have callbacks when they mess up.;)

There's an abundance of parts changers under a nice shop roof, as well as under an oak tree in the yard. It's part of the game. Lot of incompetence out there. And, in some cases............I'M ONE OF THEM

But I don't charge shop rates.

Re: Chinese parts................. Chances are, most of the parts in any car are made there, or another offshore source. You can't get away from it.

I don't claim to know anybody's overhead, but I can tell you when the price gets to a tipping point that makes it no longer viable to use any particular shop. Supply and demand.

Part of the problem is proprietary diagnostic software. Expensive to subscribe to, and not always a full suite of the required diagnostics. You can blame this on the manufacturer. But!!.............it's a sin for a shop to take in work that they know can't be diagnosed with the software they have on hand. This happens.

K'kins has a chance to buy a very nice Range Rover repo...........at a ridiculous price. We probably won't buy it. It's impossible to find anyone that can work on them........and I damn sure can't. This problem is getting worse, even with domestic autos.

When I was there Oahu I notice this
There’s a black crud that gets on the cars ,it’s like a volcanic grease . It’s extremely hard to wash off . You can see it all the exposed cars have it after the car is washed .

Is that MCAS Kaneohe Bay?

I think part of that is just Hawaii.

When I was a Claims Adjuster working vehicle service contracts, we took claim calls from Hawaii, and they were always 'way higher than here on the Mainland.

I remember in 1960 how shocked I was to have to pay 50 cents for a cup of coffee at Honolulu International Airport. Coffee was still a dime most everywhere else.
Everything that comes to any island usually costs more.

Do you go to the doctor and tell him that you looked up your symptoms and all you need him to do is remove your gall bladder, no diagnostic exam needed? I would never repair a vehicle based upon someome else's diagnosis. I need to duplicate customer concern, diagnose cause and confirm that what I did to fix it repaired the concern. Just because you have an oxygen sensor code doesn't mean you need an oxygen sensor. The BS that the repair and diagnosis only takes a few minutes is another one. By the time I take the car for a test drive to confirm the issue, connect test equipment, go through diagnostic protocol, get part prices and availability from the parts department, have the service advisor prepare a parts and labor quote I'm in for at least an hour. AT LEAST. Then if the customer isn't sitting there waiting and we have to call for approval the car will either be sitting in my stall waiting for a call back after our call goes to voice mail and we don't hear back for several hours, or the car gets put back together and run out of the shop. Yup, it takes 5 or 10 minutes to put in a MAF, but that's only a small portion of the job.
