4020 turbo

I'm looking at putting a turbo on a 1970 4020. Will a 4430 turbo and manifold fit under the hood without modifying the turbo pedestal? Thanks

I doubt it, room is tight under the hood there.

If you can find a turbo and parts from a John Deere 4320-4520? That would fit better.

The only way it's a "kit" is if it is new and never installed. Otherwise it is just a collection of parts removed from a salvage tractor, that may or may not include everything you need. I would not count on being able to easily find any missing pieces and or a replacement turbo.

Why do you want to turbo a 50+ year old tractor? Do you use the tractor and need more power? Just want it for the "cool" factor? What condition is the engine and cooling system in now? Can it handle more power reliably?

My grandpa has one and it runs and pulls really good. And we're on hills and could use the extra power. The tractor is in decent not bad but not great kinda average.

Might better just go to a bigger tractor . Sort of like over loading a truck then wonder why it is always broke down. Or suspension is shot.

we found out the hard way adding a turbo to a 4020, at least once a year would blow a hole in #6 piston did not lug it but pulled it , the way I understood they did not have good water flow to back of head

Wouldn't there be a lot more to upgrading a JD 404 non turbo to a turbo equiped engine? such as piston cooling nozzles to name just one. Without those you would be flirting with disaster, I'm thinking there's more that needs done to make the conversion work....reliably.

4320 turbo-charged engine block contains 6 orifices that spray oil on the underside of pistons to help control piston temperatures when engine is under a heavy load. 4020 has 12 qt engine oil capacity while 4320 has 16 qt capacity. 4020 cooling system has 24 qts capacity vs 4320 28 qts

Yup lots more to adding a turbo than a few bolts and a gasket. That's why i say bigger tractor and save that cash for putting on the bigger tractor besides I have never had to many tractors. In spring if everything is good we have one for the chisel plow one for disc and one for field cultivator along with planter and smaller tractor for sprayer. Then hay I use 4 tractors there with no hitching and all smaller 806,856,574and 674 Spread fertilizer with either the 2940or the 806or856 if wet then the 1466 with the duals. Just makes sense to go the bigger tractor more torque more weight and more HP .

The 4320 was a different tractor. Length of the chassis , cooling , oiling , oil spray etc .

Not sure where the “ same tractor” idea is sourced from .
