Which battery for 12 volt conversion?

I'm finally going to put in the conversion that's been sitting in the shed for a couple of years. What battery are people using in 8Ns?

    STARTER

Do you mean that the starter doesn't turn, that it doesn't turn fast enough to engage, that it doesn't engage at all, or that it engages then stops (without turning the engine)? The most common problem with old starters is that they don't turn. The most common reason for that is the brushes...

    8N hard starting finally resolved!

There is a tolerance rating for each resistor. The most common, used in a few hundred billion devices over the past century, have a 10 PERCENT tolerance. The ballast resistors are good at a 30 percent or even 40 percent tolerance, because they are feeding a circuit that doesn't much care...

    8N Carb Numbers?

It's my 1951 8N. In the service manual, this has a MS TSX241 carb. In the YTC parts lists, I see rebuild kits for TSX241A, B, C, etc, but not for straight TSX241. I dunno what's on the tractor, and if it keeps behaving, I don't care, but I'm a little concerned about the part number...

1940 9N ignition switch -- key or toggle?

Thanks, everyone! S/N is 24xxx, so I'll hunt on the left side for switch, wiring, etc. I think I'm going to go ahead and buy it from her, to get it out of her way and put some money in her pocket, then get it running and put it on CL.

1940 9N ignition switch -- key or toggle?

A while back, I mentioned my friend with the 9N. It's been sitting over winter, and now time to think about getting it going. It has a 12V conversion -- dunno whose, and haven't looked yet to see if negative or positive ground (battery is gone). Someone has been . . .uh . . ."working" on...

    Original or Moded

No. One other really good reason to keep it original is to maintain parts compatibility/reliability and to reduce surprises. While it's just like all the others, you can swap parts, make adjustments, etc and expect the same results as on other tractors. As soon as you go aftermarket, you...

    Durable Electronic Proofmeter?

What you want is something to REPLACE a Proofmeter, that is electronic. There ain't none. The Proofmeter is simply a mechanical tachometer with markings to tell you when the RPM are in the range suggested for doing particular tasks. The closest that you could some up with would be a...

    8n loader help

There are two different Deerborn loaders (by size). I don't know if they use the same frame and attachment.

    The Always Reliable 8N

My 8N is about 6 years older than I am. It's finally broken in, and -- now that it's old enough to be "collectible" -- will be working well past the age of 100.

How quickly can points be damaged if ignition left on?

I want to know where you got a battery that will still be pumping power into the coil after a couple of days! ;)

    Lesson on Solenoids

A lesson on solenoids: A solenoid is simply a switch, that is operated by an electromagnet. Early vehicles with starters used a heavy-duty switch that was operated by the foot, to carry current from the battery to the starter. The problems with this system are the longer cable leads...

You may pay a little more for parts here than from Fleabay or Scamazon, but from everything I read here, the support you get is more than worth it.
