    Loaning Equipment

I've seen several messages lately about the perils of loaning equipment and getting it back in broken condition. In the 50's and 60's my Dad's advice was to never loan out a bush hog or chain saw because of too many opportunities for devastating resuls. I've added back hoe to the list.

    Ford 501 mower problems

I ran a 501 for years and found it worked good with 3 factors addressed: guards with good ledger plates, sharp sections, and good hold downs. Guards with sharp sereated ledger plates seemed to be the key to me and I replaced them probably more often than necessary. Follow the advice other...

    New Idea Corn Pickers

Ran a NI picker for years. The PA Amish store provided all the parts I needed. Good luck.

Wondering if my tractors can handle what I want to do…

TSC use to be a good source for pitman rods for me. My dad use to make his own, believe he used ash.

Wondering if my tractors can handle what I want to do…

You have a good start. Both tractors about 40 HP can handle your implements reasonably well. Talk to people who have run the implements and find out the special things needed to keep them going. Grease and oil works wonders on old equipment. I ran a 501 mower for years and still believe they...

    ZA water pump

My ZAU had a leaky water pump, and after reading about difficulties of getting pulley off, sent it off to Welters (Verona, MO) to have them rebuild it. Happy customer.

    ZA

I had to replace the worn out plate the shifter rests up against on my ZAU. Remove the trans cover and you will see a large spring that holds the shifter up to the plate. Zip tie 3 sides of that spring off before removing--much easier to replace. Shifter will drop out. Good luck.

Moline Z Back on the Farm - Update

Thanks Cowpuncher. This forum has many sources for advice and parts, which I found invaluable. Take pictures at each step--wife insisted I keep a journal of work and progress. Post your outcome.

Moline Z Back on the Farm - Update

Last July (2019), I posted about getting my Dad's '51 ZAU back to the farm. 10 months and about 90 hours of work later, it is looking much better. Minor items remain. A labor of love.

    M602 hydraulic issues

I would look at the connection port first. Second, internal valve blockage. Good luck.

    Moline Z Back on Farm

Thanks for the reminder. Been sitting in a shed for past several years. Prior to it leaving the farm, for years, my Dad had it hooked to a feed grinder where it would not fit completely in the crib barn. Growing up, it was the main tractor for plowing, disking, and baling hay. Still can't...

    Moline Z Back on Farm

Plan to fix mechanical issues (fuel/wiring/seals) first, then will look at next step. Tin is good--surface rust. A couple "farmer fixes" need correcting to original.
