    Free fire wood

All wood has the same BTU content per pound.I heated my shop with poplar one winter with no problem. We all have favorite fire wood but any dry wood under cover is worth more than money in the bank.

    Free fire wood

Store keeper told me that 40 years ago .He bought a lot of gas line antifreeze cheap.Priced it at 19 cents a can.Very slow sales.Sales man told him to put a 3 for a dollar sign on it.Sold out fast.Theres an old book called Yankee Store Keeper by R E Gould.well worth reading if you can find a copy.

    Best and worst?

My Onan RV generator runs at 1800 rpm.I use a 6 gallon outboard tank. You can run a hose into a car or truck tank and run it long term with little noise. We loaded it into my pickup during an 8 day power outage and kept the post office open and thawed out several homes. You dont have to have a high...

    9N Starter problem (yesterday post)

Good time to learn to repair a starter. While we are on the subject.Country shops and many general stores are gone here.People run the roads to the city stores.Friend called a big shop on fixing a Ford starter .100 bucks .I fixed the starter for 10 bucks.New brushes and a light turning on the...

Oil Pan is off - should I check anything else?

I keep rope seals in a jar of oil.A dry rope seal can put a lot of drag on the crank shaft. My old Ford service manuals say soak them.

    The Better Freezer

Wind chill can affect water pipes with heat tapes on them.Never say never.A rat dug a hole from out side to a short water line. The oil furnace sucked cold air down the hole.Pipe froze.Once in 45 years.

    Old style 8N steering question

I would mill the steering arm inside face and try that.I have used brass shim stock for that fix.New parts are nice if you have the money. That box was made by GM so the story goes.

changing points on front mount distrubitor

You can short the diodes in your charger doing that.I keep a 6 volt nicad battery on the bench and then only to test coil output.Other tests should be done with an ohmmeter.

I have a 5 ton Speeco.I bought it when my son bought a load of tree length wood that had some big stuff in the load. You cant expect it to do the work of a 25 ton gas job.I have split wood with an axe, mauls and wedges and a sledge hammer.I have about 60 years in cutting and splitting wood.My son...

    860 Starter Removal

You have to remove the filter to get the starter out of a 640.You cant get the band off to check the brushes.Block drain is in the way.You will need a curved wrench to get the bolt out near the block.I have not worked on an 800 so cant answer.Service manual isnt much help.It say the oil filter...

    Buzz Saw Identification (PICT)

Saws like that were in early 1900s catalogs.Called pole saws.1 clue to its age would be the lack of arc welding on it.I doubt its a home made job.

    PISTON PUMP

I use a shallow cardboard box when taking things apart on the bench.Keeps things from rolling away.We call them beer flats. My wife use them to hold seedlings in peat pots.Stores will give you all you can carry.
