    Signs of the times 12/3

The signs always have more instant appeal to me when they are local/regional in nature. Very interesting reading on this company as it was still a viable business in a morphed form in the early 2000's. Thanks; I learned something today!

Mr. Steube, the shoe repairman, was a busy merchant in my town in the 40's - 50's. Now I can't remember seeing a shoe repair shop in decades. So many things are throw away by design these days.

I liked the sign, but I had a strange sense of deja vu while looking at it! Love the signs every day Steve; keep them coming.

We also had S&H here when I was a kid. Mom saved them religiously and redeemed them for some nice rewards.

I like this one Steve, and it piqued my interest right away. More personal than the generalized advertising on most signs.

Now I know why I was such a bad fisherman. I didn't have the best "batis" in my tackle box; only baits.

I don't do the puzzles but I sure do enjoy the signs every day. It's the way I start my mornings. So, please keep them them coming Steve, and thanks so much.

    D-Day

The Bedford Boys were company A. Dad and a wounded Bedford Boy shared an improvised sand shelter they dug with their helmets while awaiting the medics. They stayed lifelong friends. I tried several times to get my father to visit the D-Day memorial, but he could not relive the trauma.

    D-Day

My father was with Co. F, 116th infantry on the Normandy beach head. I am sure he saw something very similar. He, like so many others, was wounded before reaching the shore. Thanks for the photo WalJohn.

It is always interesting when a reply adds to the appreciation of one of Steve's signs. What did you do there and did you travel to farms across the country?

The Burma Shave signs were the highlight of many road trips when I was a boy. Always an entertaining jingle over 5 or 6 signs, followed by the Burma Shave logo on the last one.

I used it by the gallon and wishing now it had worked better. I'm still dealing with the aftermath of skin damage due to sun exposure. Had a bunch of spots treated just last week.

Great sign-really like the dog and cat image in the red cross. I don't know exactly when, but its obvious to me that these folks have met my cats!

I can remember very well in the 40's & 50's when the Rawleigh man (and the Fuller Brush man) would come visiting door to door with their sample cases and catalogs. There were always Rawleigh creams and salves in our medicine cabinet. I can also recall other items (eggs, butter, fresh...
