    Guys, my challenge now is how to get the pistons out. Or get the entire sleeve/piston combo out *while the motor is still in the tractor. Here is the current state: the head is off, the pan is off. The rod caps are off. The motor is still in the tractor. I want to avoid splitting it if I can...

    Thank you the advise was spot on. I did get the bolts out of the front but there was no way the pan was coming off until the steering axle was dropped. I jacked up on the front weight and I also had to let air out of the tires to get it down further so the pan could slip out past the oil pump...

    I inspected the oil filter and you were absolutely correct in pointing out the tube may be missing. As it is indeed missing. Perhaps I can make one from a certain type of tubing? Thanks again.

    I reinspected and you were correct, the clutch rod has a nut welded in because it seems the rod had previously pushed right through the fork. I also found grass, twigs and chewed acorn shells in the bellhousing. Chipmunks. I blew most of it out. Nasty.

    Partial update: I got the valves and springs off the head. And you were right there was a very stuck valve, the first one at the front of the engine. I had to drift it out and it resisted all the way out. Valves look quite worn. I will check for the oil filter stem tube on Saturday...

    I took a closer look at the push rods (photo) the and I see only one looks bent at the bottom tip. All are a bit rusty from sitting in that water bath that was in the crank case. The bent one is shown here second from the bottom of this photo.

    I forgot to ask: I also wonder if the oil pump pickup will obstruct me from getting the pan off once it is unbolted. I may have to take the front axle apart if that is the case.

    Thanks for the pointer to the half moon plate at the back, to know it is removable. Yes there is a bolt trapped at the front of the pan that I can feel with my pinky finger. Maybe if I made a homemade 1/2" very thin wrench I might be able to get on it, but I am not certain of that. I wonder...
