Ever been stopped by the highway patrol for a safety check

I worked in an industrial salvage yard as a summer job back in the mid 70’s while going to college. We took a remote job to torch some spindle webs from a paper making machine. My job was to cut through the 12” diameter shafts so the webs could be loaded into a semi trailer. We loaded my torch...

    Silo for Saturday (Rich’s Renderings)

My Grandsons would ask, “Grandpa, how come they built that silo in an empty field?”. Long explanation to follow. They do look lonely.

December 7th 1941 where were you?

Dad was 16 and had been driving truck picking 100# milk cans from various farms for Outagamie Producers out of Black Creek, Wisconsin. Grandpa had bought the route in January of 1940. They had a 37 Ford box type truck. Dad was on the road starting at 6 am and usually finished by 4 pm. He did all...

My kid brother was a self employed painting contractor for 25 years. If the job was within a 45 minute drive there was no charge. Anything above that and it was $20.00 an hour travel time. He always included that in the contracts. He always wrote contracts, even for painting an inside room...

Why do new cars/pickups still come with spare tires

Last time changed on my car was 1973. My utility trailer in 1994. My boat trailer in 1985 and 2004. So yes, I always carry a spare tire. Had two vehicles, minivan and SUV that had the spare under the back. Always lowered the spare and unreeled the cable and liberally greased the cable with wheel...

    Silo for Saturday

Brings back memories from 70 years ago visiting my Grandfather’s farm. Grandpa and Uncle Alan forking corn stalks into a Fox chopper, powered by a ‘29 John Deere GP. Grandpa still had a team of Belgians that pulled the wagons and the corn binder…simpler times back then.

    Bee's wax

Way back when I had a bread pan with about two inches of bees wax in it with my auto body tools. Heat it up with the torch a dip the paddle in it when doing lead work. I wonder, does anyone do lead filling anymore?

Estimate how many hours you spent driving tractors as a kid !

Spent summers 1960-67 on my Uncles 140 acre dairy farm. Conditioning hay with a John Deere G pulling a Brillion conditioner. Raking hay and straw with a John Deere B. Baling hay and straw with that G pulling a John Deere 14 T baler. No idea how many hours. Great experience for a town kid growing...
