Rebuilt A engine startup issue - additional info

Well I started to remove the rocker arm shaft and found that the nut on the midpoint stud was not tight! What are my chances that this is the problem? At the bottom of this area is where it appears to have a leak. Ill let it sit a few days and check the oil pan for coolant. Thanks!

Rebuilt A engine startup issue - additional info

The old gasket was steel on both sides and did not have any sealer. It was marked as to which side goes to the top. The new gasket has a steel side and a graphite side and is not marked as to which side is top. Which side, steel or graphite, should be top? Thanks!

Rebuilt A engine startup issue - additional info

I pulled valve cover this morning and looked down each push rod hole. I can see where the pushrod enters the block and the part of the gasket that surrounds the pushrod hole. It appears to have a small amount of coolant around one of the holes. So I guess that means there is a head crack in that...

Rebuilt A engine startup issue - additional info

Thanks for all the advice! I pulled the oil pan and the only place I see with coolant drops is on 2 or 3 of the cam lobes. The bottom of the sleeves are dry as well as the sides of the block. Mrfred54 the machine shop checked for cracks when they reconditioned the head. For kshansen I did...

    Rebuilt A engine startup issue

Rebuilt my A with new sleeves, O-rings etc. Filled the radiator with anti freeze and water mix and left for a couple of days. Have not added oil yet. So I removed the oil pan plug and about a tablespoon of the anti freeze water mix came out. What do y all think about this? Should I carry on with...

Determining when to replace ball bearings

I appreciate all the ideas! I have already spent a lot on bearings but dont want to miss one that is questionable. As a side note so far I have purchased 6 bearings that are from 5 different countries! Two are in Timken boxes marked China but the bearings have no markings. The other 4 are in...

Determining when to replace ball bearings

Thanks for the replies! I have been cleaning them and turning to see if rough spots. On one of the differential bearings thats still attached if I hold the top and bottom and try to rock there is a slight movement. I guess this is the looseness Jim spoke to? I ll also remove and check the other...

Determining when to replace ball bearings

I m working on the final drive on my A replacing seals and checking bearings. The bearings feel tight and smooth turning to me but how do you guys decide when to keep and when to replace? It s been years since the tractor was driven but I remember it did have a whine although not excessive. The...

Sizing Governor bushing on an 47 A

A little more work with the hone and the governor fits in its place now. Seems to turn smoothly. The governor teeth look to be in good shape. Thanks for the help!

Sizing Governor bushing on an 47 A

When I brought the block back from the machine shop I noticed it was missing. I can only guess it came out in the hot tank. The shop said they checked and could not find it. I should have thought to use a wire to tie it on before dropping it off there. It s not a split bushing but you can see...

Sizing Governor bushing on an 47 A

Thanks for the reply! I have a micrometer but can only get to the front side of the bushing with it. I used 2 round discs with a bolt between to pull the bearing in from front to back. I used a brake hone which resulted in the governor moving in another 1/4" or so. The governor is aprx. 3/8"...

Sizing Governor bushing on an 47 A

I have seen the smaller size bushings in hardware stores. This is the bushing that fits in the block and is aprx. 2" in diameter.

Sizing Governor bushing on an 47 A

Thanks for the replies! I was hoping to avoid purchasing a reamer especially for a one time use.
