    Adding a resistor to 12V starter motor

    I have a TO30 with the 12V conversion kit. I'm replacing the starter motor. After having blown the previous one. A friend of mine said that old vehicles typically need a resistor between the battery and the starter. Does anyone else put a an extra resistor there?

    I tried hooking jumper cables to the battery and to the starter lugs, that didn't work. Battery voltage was 12.15V. Usually a dying battery gives a weak crank. I haven't seen that cause it to go from fine to nothing in a short time.

    I paid $225 for one with a tail wheel, coulter arms, etc, complete. It was rusted, but not bad, similar to the one in the photo. I took it apart and went at it with a wire wheel. All the steel was good. I painted red rustoleom on everything but the moldboard and the land.

    I can get the engine to start but it dies after a few seconds. Able to repeat this over and over. Need the choke even on a 90' day after several short fires. What is going on?

    Engine Quitting on Ferguson 35 tractor

    I started to have the same problem on my TO 30 right after I installed a vertical exhaust pipe. My manifold is not cracked, it is pitted. I wonder if there is a type of bushing or grease that is safe to use to try and improve the seal?
