841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Yep it's a combo version and it was in high.

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

While I was putting the shaft in parts storage I realized that the snap ring hadn't failed but the lip on the mounting flange had snapped off. Thought that was interesting. Brush hogged all over the place yesterday. Drug old downed limbs to the firepile. It was a good day. I tested the...

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Old and new shafts. 4 bolts and it came right out. In various pieces. Got most of the mud out of it. It was bad enough that it wouldn't run through the drain at first. It had maybe half a gallon instead of 3 gallons the manual called for. Had to grind the cutout on the tongue support to...

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Quick update. Wrapped it up today and did some brush hogging. Old shaft lost a split ring and the bearing was no longer tight in the flange. This explains the shaft going in and out with the engage lever. Not majorly twisted. If you look down a spline, there is a tiny bit of curve to it...

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Thank you John. I'm and idiot but the guy I bought it from was a bigger idiot. He didn't know what it was and thought it was a 70s ford but he would take it to a well known shop for service. Anything that he's messed with on the tractor has been a cluster. The hydraulic fluid looked new...

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

That is the best explanation of that I have ever read. Thank you. I feel slightly less crazy now. The fill for hydraulic is on the left side under the seat above the pto engage lever correct? Here's the fluid I already have on hand from messing with the power steering and loader.

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Heres a pic of my brush hog pto connection. It's a weird shape and probably wouldn't have worked with the new version. The new od clutch works fine on the new shaft. I'm betting that next I'll have to trim the shaft down though.

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Bare with me Pomester, I'm mechanically an idiot and this is my first tractor. How are #24 and #25 related? I ask because they list different types of fluid (on that manual page) and I assumed they were mutually exclusive but the guy on youtube drained #25 for replacing the shaft on his 8N...

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

I had to ask cause the new thing doesn't look like the old thing and the old thing just barely worked with my brush hog. I think the coupler had rubbed quite a bit. Atleast now I know what a pto cap is. I was so confused looking through the parts. What do I do if the brush hog (my only...

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

I'm back with more dumb questions. The drain I need is 24 right? Also, is this shaft flange going to work? This is what's on it now.

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

The pto assembly is on it's way. In the mean time, what's everyone using for pto/hydraulic fluid?

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

So probably still needs replaced even if it's stuck? Do you think the PTO I posted above is correct? The conversion part is throwing me. Thanks

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Thank you John! So more than likely I'll need one of these? and a gasket, and I should probably get a pto overrun clutch while I'm at it?

841 pto won't engage all of a sudden.

Got the 841 out to brush hog the paths. Stopped and disengaged it, turned around, and now it wont engage. Lever moves a little (shaft moves an inch) but no engagement. Looked at the fluid and it looks icky (milky) and need changed. I dont assume that changing the fluid is the fix. Where...

Just got my first tractor. 1959 841 Powermaster. Lots of questions.

That looks like the one! Thanks Tractor and Tom!
