How is the soil health in a typical industrial corn field?

Hi, I'm reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan. I read his book, In Defense of Food, and really liked it. Very well researched, and well written too. I'm having a much harder time with The Omnivore's Dilemma (he rants about corn for 120 pages so far), but I'll keep going. He does seem...

Rent out your shop when not tractoring?

Hi, I have a fully equipped shop, and can take on pretty much any project (wood, metal, auto/tractor). And I use it regularly to putter, but there's usually room for another person or two to work as well. Do any of you guys rent out shop space? I know I'd have to keep an eye on my hand tools...

    Stonework on Norwegian farm

Hi, I watched a video about a small veg operation on a larger dairy farm in Norway, and near the end there was a fantastic stone cottage that I thought Larry would like. Another shot of it. The video was from Richard Perkins, called "Farming alone with zero frost-free months"...

    Skid steer / stump bucket

I use pallet forks, with my A300 Bobcat, to remove stumps. Between back dragging, and prying, I can get most trees out of the ground. I often remove trees, roots and all, without cutting them down.

New tractor barn is almost done...

Hi, I'm building a new tractor barn this Summer, and I'm almost done. It's 30'x48', with 12' ceilings, and an attic loft (48x8x6'4"tall). Lots of storage space, but I regret not going another ten feet longer... My old tractor shed (that's a 1970 MF 1080, still runs, but needs a new clutch)...

    Traditional farmer

I like your posts! Most of what I know of Venezuela is about the Oil and Gas industry. They have the largest proven oil reserves of any country on Earth. More than Saudi Arabia... They are extremely wealthy in that respect. Your previous post encouraged me to do some research about Ag in...

Price of gasoline in Vancouver, BC, Canada

Hi, the discussion on the price of fuel got me wondering what the price of gasoline in Vancouver is, in US dollars per US gallon. The high price I saw today was $1.569/L in Canadian $. That equates to $4.615/gal in US$ per US gallon. I'm going to stop driving my truck (12mi/gal US)...

    getting old

I figure that, if I can wait, it's a lot easier to get a local concrete guy to drop concrete into my forms when he has another job in the area. He'll even drop off 1 yd if that's all I need. Troy

1965 Mustang 351W Idles Fine Drives Rough ???

Wow! I had that exact same car (and problem...). My engine was the 351W, but someone had wired it as a 289. The farmer next door looked at it and said, "I bet that's a 351W". He knew the firing order, switched the plug wires around, and it purred like a kitten. Best engine I ever had... I got...

    Neat "tiller" / "tractor"?

I had never seen one of these before last weekend. It would look great in new clothes... Anyone got one? Bye for now, Troy

for the retirees-how much money did you need

This is a very interesting topic to me too. I'm 3 years from my earliest retirement, at which time my after tax take-home would be $2375/mo. I think I can get by on that, but might work an extra two years to get $2750/mo take-home. I've done a pretty detailed budget, and I think that will be...

Pole building vs Concrete foundation and stick frame?

Hi, Jim's post was very instructive. Thanks! I'm planning to start a smaller (30x48') building this Summer. I'm planning to pour an "engineered slab" (6" slab, but with 12x12" outer margins) and then build a stick framed shop on top of that. My question is what is the benefit of a pole...

India is the World's largest exporter of beef

I liked Larry's thread about the price of beef. That's very cheap compared to beef prices here in Northern Canada. But many of us, myself included, rarely buy meat. I live in the "Serengeti of the North", and almost all the meat I consume is game meat, Moose, Elk, Bison. People do eat deer here...

    Agricultural attachments on skidsteer?

Eldon, thanks for those detailed photos! Gives me great ideas. I might space my links out further, to imitate a tractor. That way I don't have to get different drive shafts for my implements (mower, tiller). I'll post photos when I get it done. Thanks, Troy

    Agricultural attachments on skidsteer?

Hi, a month ago I was planting a couple rows of raspberries, and I had my Bobcat right there. It occurred to me that it would be kinda convenient to be able to run a furrow with the Bobcat. Do any of you guys have Ag attachments for your skidsteers? I planned to build a 3pt hitch, with...
