N series valve lash adjustment after rebuild

I honestly didn’t back them all the way out to see. It was such a frustrating day that I mostly blocked it from memory. I did find success working the bolt in and out a bit before putting the lifter in the bore to make the actual lash adjustment.

N series valve lash adjustment after rebuild

When I originally set the valve lash I absolutely ruined the sheet metal tappet holders. The only way I could get any movement on the adjustment screw without rounding the head was to take the valve completely out of the head and go in with a long extension to use a 6 point socket. Quite a long...

N series valve lash adjustment after rebuild

Sounds like I’ll add it to the 15 year PM lol. It’s developed a little cough at idle and once up to temp at about half throttle. But I suspect it’s likely an issue with the Chinesium Carb because I just can’t tune it out. Otherwise it runs good, the cooling system keeps up in the Louisiana heat...

N series valve lash adjustment after rebuild

I know the recommendation is to do a valve lash adjustment after a break-in period once you’ve done a valve job. My side mount 8N is probably coming up on its 50 hour mark and I’m starting to wonder if those of you who did this lash adjustment post break-in found any that actually needed...

Got my 8n running again still issues

You need to tune your carb. See attached (assuming you have a Marvel Schebler and not a Zenith; unlikely but calling out the possibility)

Cleaning up my 8N for a little paint!

Oh I see you chose to do it the right way. Bravo sir.

Good gasket material for oil drain plug?

If you use cork, place a thin cereal box washer on top of it. Leave both dry, and the cardboard should slide on top of the cork, preventing shearing. The same way kitchen sink tail lines are sealed to the bottom of the sink. It’s typically a rubber seal with cardboard washer to prevent the...

Tearing into 8N rear end seals

My late 50 side mount has a couple seals leaking. The shift cover I’m sure I just need to replace the gasket on. I probably got greedy and didn’t let the RTV set properly before tightening down. The left rear axle seal I’m a little more nervous about tearing into. YouTube always makes things...

8n that needs to be buried!

Something to consider…..new seats if it’s within your means or to have a shop do it. I replaced my valve seats with stellite and had the local mechanic do a 3-angle job. Not his typical work, but he just so happened to have rebuilt his late pawpaw’s 8N a couple years prior and happened to have...

    Valve replacement

I had a crack behind the dry sleeve of #3 cylinder that I smeared a little JB SteelStik putty into before driving the sleeve home. No issues post startup. I wouldn’t worry about that crack since it goes from the water jacket to the water jacket. Nor do I think it’s severe enough to compromise...

    Ford 8n spark

Just here to say that every “no fire” troubleshooting I’ve done has wound up being a bad ground connection. Once at the battery post after sitting up during the rebuild and once where the cable had significant corrosion where the lug bolts to the steering box. Less helpful advice than others...

    VENTURY DIRECTION

If it’s helpful to you, I’m attaching the MS service manual that I have. The diagrams are a bit washed out, but it helps with most common troubleshooting.

    Wiring confusion- 8N

I’m seeing now I misread the OP’s original post, as I thought he said that he was seeing two wires to the coil, where the drawings only called for one. That’s where the “check if it’s Pertronix” recommendation came from. Good catch.

    Wiring confusion- 8N

This is for my own knowledge, as I’ve never touched a front mount. But this diagram from myfordtractors.com has an extra wire to the coil for what the amendor calls a “12V breakerless module”, which I took to be an electronic ignition system. What is this extra wire the diagram is calling for?

    Wiring confusion- 8N

This is the wiring pictogram that Lynn is referencing. Sometimes more helpful if you’re not too sure what an actual wiring diagram is referencing.
